The significance of a dry Lake Meade where Las Vegas gets 90% of its water supply is the hammer that will trigger the collapse of the Las Vegas economy. Without viable alternatives for the future, we will have to limit growth, impose greater restrictions, rationing or choose priorities..
The pumping and distribution of water and sewerage is the highest single user of electricity in the state, consuming more energy than all other uses combined.
ASBE offers the best known answers. These are the reasons why. It collects and stores water at conception, thereby eliminating evaporation, losses to roadside vegetation and percolation. It prevents water accumulation on highways thus preventing accidents and saving lives. It provides electricity with micro turbines and hydro power at storage basins before releasing the water to communities down stream. It also limits the amount of electricity required to pump the water to the surface or delivery to water plants. Reducing that requirement by 50% will save millions of dollars in costs that can be used for other purposes. More importantly, the collection of water can replace the loss of water from Lake Meade to insure a continuous supply to Las Vegas making water a one way trip to Lake Meade versus the current two way, in and out system.
What is ASBE? It is a planned 3000 mile high speed complete electrical transportation and water/electric transmission system. It produces its own electricity and collects water on the roof of the structure and from culverts that cross the interstate for micro generation and basin storage/hydro generation for future use. It has 336,640 square feet of collection area per mile. No attempt to calculate the potential total collection has been done, due to varied mountainous terrain, range of collection, thousands of culverts and annual rain/snowfall that would affect total accumulation. However, just from ASBE an annual three inches collection will yield 944,965 gallons per mile. In the United States the range is from less than 2 in. (5 cm) in Death Valley, Calif., to more than 100 in. (250 cm) on the coast of Washington state; in most of the country the average rainfall is between 15 and 45 in. (38 and 114 cm) annually. Using the absolute minimum of three inches for 30 miles we get 28,348,950 million gallons, 300 miles will produce 283,489,500 million gallons and 3000 miles will produce 2,834,895 billion gallons, this is on the short side, since many areas have much more rain and snow. The only difference is we have created a short cut by collecting the water before it’s absorbed or evaporated. This is akin to what took place with the planning of Lake Meade/Hoover Dam where we share our water supply. It’s time we cut our losses and considered survival.

Because of the pending water shortage, lack of cooperation from farmers with water rights, pipe line right of ways, acquisition etc.
Mrs. Mulroy may want to consider the potential of what ASBE offers. ASBE is currently designed for two East / West routes along major interstates in California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Ohio, New Mexico, Louisiana, Texas.
My suggestion is to create another route in Nevada running North to South that uses the resources we already own, collect the water where and when it rains or snows and during the seasonal snow pack run off, this avoids absorption, evaporation and the expense of pumping it out of the ground or lake.
Using ASBE methodology will eliminate many of the obstacles that stand in the waters way today. Water collection, hydro generation and storage are just a part of the ASBE system, but vital to survival of Southern Nevada.
